Comment: I am a first time owner of any kind of bird. Yesterday, I brought home a cockatiel from a nearby pet shop. At the pet store, he was very friendly and he already knew how to get up on a finger if given the command "up up". There were maybe 10 birds in this one giant cage. All of these birds were very young, just babies, but one, in particular, kept climbing onto the perches and climbing onto my finger. He did not bite, but he was "exploring" my hand gently with his beak. He was also interested in my rings and liked to chew on them. After a while, we decided that we were going to bring him home, and after a few months of dedicated research, and proving to my dad that I could do this, my wish was finally granted. The people at the pet shop poked some holes in a small cardboard box, and said to my concerned face that he would be okay for the 15 minute ride back home. The whole ride he didn't move much or anything, but you could hear his little nails against the box. When we got home, and I opened the box, he was kind of crouched into a corner with some of his tailfeathers fanned out, making hissing noises. I carefully set the box on the couch and tilted it sto one side so Romeo(the bird) could go out himself. After about 5 minutes of waiting, he walked out of the box. Though he was still hissing a little bit, I was able to get him onto my finger and transfer him upstairs and into his cage. Romeo was not as I remembered him in the pet shop. He was a little bit more stressed and tense, and he kept puffing his feathers out. Not to worry, Romeo is a very heathly bird, and so were all his other tank mates. That night we put a cover over his cage and went to sleep. He experienced no thrashig, but once I woke up and heard him hiss once or twice. This morning was pretty much the same and he has started hissing and biting a bit. The bites have not broken skin, but still are a bit painful. Some people who own birds have told me to ignore the bites and tell him "no bite" and then try again to pick him up. It seems to work a bit better for my mom, but she had owned birds as a kid, and I was very new at this, so I was a bit timid around him when he was hissing and biting. I know that training a bird does take time, but I am worried that I will become even more timid and will not find a very helpful way to get him to stop biting, resulting in my parents telling me that he doesn't need to be in our home if I can not take care of heim and play with him.Although, just now, we moved him downstairs where there was more movement and things going on making it almost as busy as the pet store was, and I read to him a little, which he seemed to like. I am nervous and I do not want anything to happen to him because I believe that we have a chance together. Just now, we were able to touch him a little, and it seemed to me like he bent his head down to me!(This is what my friends bird had done to me a while ago when he was showing me his trust, and I was very happy about it.) I am not so sure that I would need help now, but then again, I might. I would like it if anyone who knows any tricks on how to hget a cockatiel to stop biting if they could please email me using the address that I listed above. I would appreciate your help.Thank you,Bekii

Comment: In January my 9 yr old and I had a house fire. Needless to say the smoke killed our parakeet and white dove. She had had them for 1 1/2 yrs. She was devestated. I told her once we moved and got settled in we would get a new bird. It took 3 months to settle everything. Asap I took her to the pet store after school as a surprise. We decided on a tiel. She wanted another parakeet. We have had Peanut for almost a week.I'm pretty sure it's a boy. It's a pearl with a yellow face. Peanut doesn't like to come out of his cage much. Once he's out he does pretty good. The first time I took him out he was hanging from the side of my knuckle. That was pretty painful and bled a lot. That didn't stop me from working with him. He has already started nodding when I say yes. Not all the time though. I have to use his swing to get him on it and then out. I really hope this works out. I think he will bring us many years of happiness once we get past the biting.

Comment: well I know this is mainly a cockatiel site... and I have one whom I love dearly.......but the story that I thought of.....is about aI couple of sparrows, that introduced+ my friend and I witht he interesting birds lol....you see my friend and I we had birds growing, but they werne't the friendly type just the sit in the cage ands cream. Last July, my friend and I received some baby sparrows, we weren't the "bird lover" type at all at that time... but we knew we couldn't let these creatures die..... we thought hey we will do our best...and then release them. But then we got soo rewarded by their love.... as we were mommy they flew right too us and played with us.....and one of them....flew away, like we planned in the past...... but at that rate we were goign to keep them. about 2 days later...... Avery the sister, we were guessing at the time cuz she would just sit and preen...lol. found a space under neath the bath room door, and drowned int he toilet. I almost gave up on birds at that rate, and I still get choked up every time I tell that story.Bu if it wasn't for my sparrows, I wou ldn't have Eli. I got Eli back in late July. He was abused and neglected. he loves me now, but when I first got him he bit the snot out of me. and didn't trust anyone. He is doing much better now..we have been thru dog attacks, getting loose outside, and all kinds of things likd getting stuck in key board. But he is my best friend in life. Don't know what I would do with out my Eli.

Comment: One ordinary day my friend came over for a visite, we decided we were going to play with my bird Max. She put him on her shoulder and that's when he started doing something you wouldn't believe, he took of her earring you probably think she has noticed, nope! He took it off so sneakily that she didn't even realize it what had happened. She then figured it out, but when she tried to get it back Max through it straight onto the floor! What a hilarious sight!

Comment: I have a normal gray tiel named Kyeema. When she's sitting by herself on top of the chair when we are playing a card game she acts like she has an imaginary tiel friend on the chair with her- she whistles, tries to stand taller, and all of the sudden she will turn to the side spread her wings a tiny bit as if to be surprised and then do a wolf whistle. I love her soooo much!

Comment: Sammy was our cockatiels name we are pretty sure he was a male... this bird was VERY unusual Bird!! Very Smart we bought him Sept 20th 2002 he came right to my husband from his cage and once he was put down he came right over to me... We thought he was the lucky one for us!!! well anyway he use to talk AND whistle, he was very smart. He said to me every morning after I took off his blanket from his cage GOOD MORNING, he said good night when I went to cover him at night, when I opened up the cage he would say come here, then when I picked him up he said HELLO.When I had the cage open he use to like to walk on the outside of the cage and I use to say to him SAMMY GET DOWN!!!So now whenever he use to do it without me seeing him he use to say SAMMY GET DOWN, He said Sammy come here, He knew the wolf whistle the PC richards whistle, I Love Lucy song he also would say... What Are You Doing! He was SO amazing, well anyway all in all he was a very happy little boy!!! It all happened on Aug 30th I was cleaning the bathroom and my husband was outside and when we were not in the room he would start screetching so I covered him and when I went to do that he (SAMMY) said to me GOOD NIGHT SAMMY, then I proceeded to finish cleaning, when I went over to uncover him to clean out his cage I found him on the bottom of the cage, and I screamed to my husband and he came running over and tryed mouth to mouth and it was too late, my little boy SAMMY was gone, We DON'T know what the cause was. All I know is every morning when I get up I cry cause I am so use to hearing him say to me GOOD MORNING,and I looked foward to hearing that... And now I don't hear it anymore.. This is so upsetting to me.. he was more to me than a bird,he was the first bird that I ever had and a very special one at that!! I cry for him every day. We want to get another one but I know it won't be the same, All I do know is we are going to get another male, and its going to be hand fed one. Anyone that feels the pain that I feel PLEASE send me an e-mail, I would really like to hear from you!!!

Comment: My husband and I have been into bird husbandry for 10 years and have 22 birds. Most of them are parakeets that have been reared in our flock, but we also have 2 conures and a cockteil. Lately we've been having a problem with our keet babies being born with a weak leg. They do alright for a few weeks then they either twist the leg or get it caught somehow and then fracture it or possibly break it. We love em up and they get better but the leg is never right again. Now we have a new baby, Sunny, and she has injured her weak leg on the thigh, up under her feathers and I can not figure out how she could have done it. The only thing I can imagine that is possible is her parents have hurt her while feeding her. There is no bird specialist where we live and we end up tring to doctor all of them ourselves. The books we use said we need a vet to do surgery on her. Is there anyone out there who can give us some help on figuring out the cause for this weakness. Could it be genetic? They are not the product of inbreeding. None of the first parents exhibit any problems with their legs. Also they have mineral stones and vitamin supplements so we don't think it's a lack of nutrition. Is there a web site that addresses these problems. We will not destroy any of these sweet babies, we love them to much. They are our children. Anyone with a suggestion please feel free to contact us at the above e-mail address. Thank you for reading this.

Comment: I have two cockatiels who are my baby's. Ernie is my boy. I bought him about four years ago from a local breeder. She had about eight babies in a box and when the box opened they all looked up. I thought 'I wan't them all'. But knowing that wasn't possible I choose one. I named him Ernie because my dad once had a budgie named Bert. We became the best of friends. After various health problems such as a sore right eye, broken toes, blood wings etc I thought why is all this happening. I once took hom to the vet because he had a wet patch on his tummy. When the vet cut away the feathers there was a large bloody hole there. I was devestated. The vet said he may not recover, but thankfully he did. Then six months later I took him outside as I had done ever since he was a baby, and he suddenly flew away. I have never felt as gutted as I did that afternoon. I searched for him for two hours.I knocked on every door in the surrounding blocks. I then went back home to begin drawing up a lost flyer. I could hardly see through my tears. I had basically thought that was it. I decided to have another search. I roamed the streets whistling and calling out his name. Then all of a sudden I hear this a bird singing a song. It sounded like Ernie only I had never heard the tune before. I followed the songs direction and looked up and there he was high up in a tree. Since then he hasn't been allowed outside in case he flys off again. About six months ago Ernie started plucking his feathers out. He was getting bald on his chest and espcially under his wings. I took him out to my avairian vet who said straight up that he needed a mate. A girlfreind. So thats how I became a mom again. I went to a breeder and there were two to choose from. I let Ernie do the choosing. I named her Maggie. She is still very scared and completley loves Ernie. He isn't to keen on her. I just love her so much and I hope she will learn to love me. So thats my story. Thanks for reading it. I'd better get back to giving Ernie his neck rub. See you.

Comment: I'm new to the tiel world. I've always wanted a tiel and now i have one :). On the nite i brought the baby home my mom was with me at the petshop. There were 4 tiels but this one tiel had a personality on it like you wouldn't believe. I'f you ever seen the movie Shrek the baby tiel reminded my mom and I of the donkey at the beginning of the movie where he is saying "pick me, pick me" there was no way that it was staying there with the other tiels, so we bought the baby an named it Kiki. We still don't know the sex of the baby yet (even tho i've only had it for 2 days). I've researched online to try an find out what sex Kiki is but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, does anyone know roughly how long it takes a tiel to talk if at all? Please feel free to email me with any suggestions.

Comment: I used to have two male white faced cockatiels. One of them got very sick and died. (even after the the hundreds of dollars in vet bills) I was very sad but I still mad my other one Max. Max and me were best pals, he would sit on my shoulder while I waslked around the house or watched tv he even took showers with me! Well one say it was really hot so I opened my bedroom window for max to have some fresh air. My little sister came in and decided to hold Maax, not knowing that the window was open and he flew out. I searched for him day after day looking for him, I posted up lost signs and talked to pet shelters but I never found him. Now it is a year later and even though I know that I should give up I am not going to. I know that my beloved bird is out there somewhere and I am gonna keep searching until I find him. If you see a grey cockatiel with a white face and some white on his wings that wears a purple colored band, or know someone who found one, can you pease notify me. I really miss him and would be so happy if I got him back. I live in Everett, Washington about 2 miles away from the Everett Mall. My phone number is 425-337-5617, and ask for Jayme. We are on the internet a lot but please keep trying to get through. You can also e-mail me at the address shown above, I check the everyday. I also have pictures of him that I can send to anybody who want them.

Comment: I have a cockatiel named Cinnamon, and my little sister has a cockatiel named Pepper. She doesn't deserve a bird. She never pays attention to him, except when I take him out of the cage to let the poor thing have a little excersise, and then she either sets him on the couch and ignores him while she dances with one of her little friends, or says, leave MY bird alone! and sets him back in the cage! She's a real winner, huh? I want Cinnamon & Pepper to mate, but they don't seem to like each other. I called the breeder I bought them from to tell her my problem, and she said, All in good time... Well anyways, I want babies! I want to be an avian veteranarian when I grow up, and want to have all parrot species. African grey parrots (Congo species) are my favorite, with cockatiels coming a VERY close 2nd. :D THE END ( ta da )

Comment: I think that every bird lover's nightmare is their bird getting out and flying away. As I write this my baby Hope is sitting on my shoulder, a true testimonial of God's loving heart.I was left behind by my family when I was 13 years old. They went to Florida and left me here in Washington homeless, no family and very lonely and afraid. I spent up until I was 18 homeless and scared. My only companion was God and altough that's the best love you could ever want, I always adopted stray animals to be company to me as well-kind of like a surrogate family. When I was 18, I met the most amazing guy in the world and his family took me in to live with them. For the first time I had a mom, dad, brothers and sisters and a bed. I even had my very own cup. Fortunately before I had come there, my pets had all found new homes of people to take care of them better than I could, but I missed them terribly. (I did get to keep one cat, but she lives outside in the feilds and I don't usually see her) I just really wanted a friend I could talk to and love on, and I prayed real hard for one to come along. Meanwhile, I went back to high school and started towards my diploma, and got two jobs. One month after I got my new family, as I was doing my homework, I heard my dad yelling at me to hurry over to where he was. So I ran out to the pool where I saw him looking up at a pine tree and talking to a little cockatiel. (I knew nothing about birds at that point and wasn't sure I wanted one) He said if he talked to it long enough it would come down and I could keep it. Two hours later, this little cockatiel (after much persuasion) flew down and lit on my shoulder. I carried him into the house and he hasn't left my side since. I named him Hope, and He is an everyday reminder of how God always listens and answers, even if it's in the way you'd never expect. He says ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and the door will be answered. I didn't know it, but Hope was the desire of my heart I had been asking for.

Comment: Just one more thing I wanted to tell you about Budd Burd is he really likes a cassette of bird noises I got one time in the new-age music section at the store. (Somebody went out and recorded "woodland" sounds, and lots of birds are chirping, there are a bunch of recordings like that you can get). Budd loves it. I can walk over to the stereo and tell him "here comes the Birdie-Tape Budd!" and Budd stands at attention and starts chirping even before I put the tape in. I play it for him almost every day. He's starting to imitate the other birds calls.

Comment: Our tiel, Budd Burd, says pretty bird and wolf-calls.Once he flew in the bathroom and sat on my shoulder while I was taking a bath. And he slept on my chest with me when I took a nap.He likes crawling all over me when I'm on the floor watching tv with a blanket. He walks all over the blanket and comes up to my face and sort of "kisses" me on the bottom lip.He doesn't like people's hands, wants to bite, but I have fun putting my hand under the blanket and wiggling it and he runs over and bites the blanket and tries to burrow under it to try to get to that "hand" in there somewhere.

I mean, actual tricks, like flying through hoops, and allowing themselves to be laid flat on thier back, or something like that. I live in Arizona. If any of u know where that is, or lives there, too, could u plz tell me if u know about a place i can find books or tapes on training cockatiels near there? I live right across the Colorado river from California. So, again, if u know any where/any one close to that location that has the items i'm looking for, could u plz post it on this stories board? i can't get access to my e-mail, so plz don't try e-mailing me. Comment: I am new to cockatiels. They are so wonderful I'm wondering why I didn't get one earlier! I kept bugging my parents to get one when my friend told me about hers. My birthday was coming up and my parents said that if I got enough money for my birthday then I could buy one (they couldn't buy me one because we really didn't have alot of extra money at the time). Well, my birthday rolls around and it happens that I got $60! I've heard of some cockatiels being for sale for $40, so I buy a book about cockatiels, and read the whole thing. My mom takes me looking for cockatiels when I finished the book. Our first stop is the local pet shop (C&D feeds). They have some cockatiels there, but I didn't think I should get any from them. The birds were in a cage too small for so many birds, and a few of them had really puffed up feathers. The book said that being cluttered together subjects cockatiels to sickness, and if a birds' feathers are puffed, it usually means it's sick, so we blow that place. Next we go to a friend of my grandpa's to look at a couple of her birds. The male's feathers are a little torn up (probobly from brushing them against the cage too ruffly), but the female looks fine. She is almost all grey, with a little white.I decide that if I don't find anything better, I'll come back for the female. About a week later my mom finds an ad in the paper about a private breeder selling some cockatiels for $50. The book said that a private breeder is the way to go, so we call the lady. We set up an appointment for the next day. She is going to take some birds to her husband's plant nurseury (did I spell that right? probly not.). So my mom drives me over there. We tell the breeder's husband what we're all about and he shows us where the birds are. There are some cockatiels, and some parakeets in the small avairy. I like what I see, so we set up an appointment as soon as possible to go to the lady's house. When we get there, Linelle (the breeder)takes us right to her avairy for the young birds. Linelle puts a small plastic chair in the avairy for me to sit on while I choose a bird, so that I don't accidentally step on one (thier wings were clipped). They swarmed all over me! I had cockatiels on my shoulders, arms, and feet! That must be what heaven feels like ( :) )! I end up narrowing it down to two females, but before I could choose, my mom begs me to pick a male instead. She really wanted a cockatiel that would talk. But I refuse. I pick the female on my left. She just cuddled right up to me! The thing that really got me was that she kept nibbling on my glasses. It was so cute! Now I have a female cockatiel named Cinnamon, and colored pearled. Sia, thanx for readin'

Comment: About a week ago my fiance and I came home from the neighbors' house to discover our 16-year-old cockatiel's (Dixie) cage on the floor. Apparently our dogs were rough housing and knocked the cage over. We thought the cage was in a "safe" place, but I guess we were wrong. Anyway, when I picked Dixie up out of the cage, his left leg was nothing but blood. I immediately grabbed paper towels and applied pressure, along with wrapping a dishtowel around him for warmth. We rushed him to an emergency vet (it was almost midnight on a Sunday), where he was operated on. He had one toe removed and a multiple stitches to close several wounds on his leg and lower body. But, Dixie is fine (sitting on my shoulder as write this). He has an E-collar on and his bandage was removed the day before yesterday. He hates the antibiotics, but he doesn't seem to hold a grudge. Everyone agrees that this is one tought little bird. My regular vet, as well as the emrgency vet says he should have died from the blood loss. We still can't figure out what he got injured on. I think it was the wire holder that holds his water bottle. It was sticking in the cage and is the only thing that I can see that could cause these types of injuries. I guess Dixie decided he wasn't ready to leave us yet. I still can't believe he survived. He's my little miracle bird. Now he gets extra, extra special attention.

Comment: Last summer I had lost my elderly father, and 6mo before I had to put a 16 yr old cockatiel (Chi Chi)down for a kidney tumor. One morning I was looking thru the paper at the lost and found pets. A lady had a cockatiel that was found walking on a sidewalk, unhurt, tame, and healthy looking.I went to vist her and fell in Love.We decided that she would keep the found ad running for a week and if no one responded, I could have her.She had a cockatoo, and didn't want another bird.In the meantime I called all veterinary office in the city and left my name, but there was no response at all. This amazed me!Needless to say,I became a new mom, named my baby Angel, She and Dusty get along good. They each have a separate cockatiel cage,in a small bedroom all to themselves. I also have two cats.I have always found this blessing uncanny, because I felt my father or Chi Chi sent her to me at a low point in my life.

Comment: Well, I am in seventh grade and when I got there today it was like almost everyday, get off my bus, wait for my friend Chris. But today in second period, pandemonium struck. Parents were calling, kids were crying, teachers were awestruck at the terroism hit. When I got home I was exahusted and I had to baby-sit in twenty minutes. At 19 minutes, no one was home and what I heard sent me flying out the door and down the street. I heard clearly "Hey baby". When I got home I immedeatly took my best friend, my 4 month-old cokatiel; Kazooie (she got her name from the video-game character from banjo and Kazooie) and then I said to her what I say to her every time I see her, "Hey baby" and then it struck me: SHE HAD LEARNED HER FIRST WORD, OR PHRASE RATHER!!!!!!!! She got lots of cuddling and treats and had the privalage of taking a nice warm shower with her owner, me. And when I was praising her I forgot about the terrorism and realized that she is my best friend, and the best pet I have ever had.

I had to leave and run an errand after work (I bring him to and from work everyday). I stuck him in his cage, which he hates, but if I am not around it is the safest place for him. Anyway I came back about an hour later and asked him if he was ready to go home. His cage has two doors, one on top and one at the bottom. He was sitting on a branch at the top so I opened the top door and reached in so he could jump on my hand but instead he went down to the bottom of the cage. I closed the top door and opened the bottom door and again said are you ready to go home and put my hand in the cage. He looks at my hand and walked into his box as if to hide and let me know how mad he was at me. I reached in the box and took him out and he got to ride home on my shoulder the 13 miles home. Guess I started something because now he thinks he has to ride on my shoulder to and from work everyday.

I approached the little bird about the same time a rogue cat was lunging for the little bird. I nailed the cat with a water balloon and the bird flew up into a nearby tree. I grabbed my ladder and went after the bird. The poor thing was so tired and hungry that it just fell asleep in my hands. It seemed as though my dog was giving me a sign or something to let me know that she had passed over...What a trip. So now as I type this, this four year old "Baby" is tearing up my mouse and walking all over my keyboard.

Comment: I have a tiel named Gwendolyin...the bird sticks to me like glue. Even now I can hear her chirping for me. One of her favorite activities is preening my ears...its cute and sweet in a way, until she nips a bit too hard *swats at bird annoyingly* She also likes to hang out on my laptop keys and drop bits of cracker in between...You only annoy the ones you love right? :)

Comment: The other day , I had my two lutino/pearled tiels out of their cage. The one we named Tweety took off flying to the top of our entertainment center. We have a vase of artificial flowers at the back against the wall and Tweety decided to land on them. Well, it landed on a piece of grass & it gave way to it's weight. The next thing we knew, the bird was upside down and then down behind the entertainment center! We looked back and it was screaming and trying to get itself out of the mess it was in to. I had to reach behind and gently pull the bird within reach by its wing. Once it was safely on my hand, it walked up my arm, on to my shoulder, and started giving me kisses on the cheek as a thankyou!

Comment: It was cool that night, so Elvis, my cockatiel, sat on my shoulder while I went into the bedroom to get a blanket for the couch. When I picked up the red & white checkered blanket, he flew off my shoulder and went running away. This was strange, because he usually runs towards me, not away from me. I picked him up, sat on the couch, arranged the blanket over my legs and he began to frantically run up the back of the couch. I finally realized he was afraid of the red and white blanket. We would put him on it and he would run as fast as possible to get off of it. He looked silly picking his legs up so high as if the blanket were hot to his feet! I finally had to put it away because he was so afraid of it. He also whistles a few songs and learned to say "pretty bird" recently.

Comment: I have a white-faced female named Orlitza. She's about five months old now. She is very, very spoiled and thinks that she is a dog or a cat, I am not sure which yet! She starts chirping when I unlock the door after getting home from work and doesn't shut up until I get her out of her cage, after which she starts cooing. She coos and puts her head down until I pet her and ruffle her feathers. When she's tired of that, she puts her head up, indicating that she wants her beak rubbed. I've never had a bird as loving! She has a love/hate relationship with my husband. Since her wings were hacked too short by the pet store I bought her from, she can't fly at all. So when she sees my husband, she jumps onto the floor where she immediately spreads her wings and waddles as fast as she can to him, then she hisses and flaps until he picks her up. She thinks she's tough. Hence her name, Orlitza, Russian for eagle hen.

He will not let anyone get close to her if he is there. He will attack anyone who tries it. He doesn't like me because everytime I go in to her room, he comes out of nowhere and attacks me. My sister treats him as a little baby. He is already really spoiled. Is there anyone else with a bird like this one? But you know what? For some reason, I do love him with all my heart, even if he gets on my nerves most of the time.*****

She also has the wierd habit of chasing peoples feet around and talking to them! When she does this for a while she wont leave your feet alone and will not sit calmly on my shoulder - she just has to be on the ground near my feet! Does anyone elses cockatiels do this? It's pretty funny! She also likes to bang her beak against windows, mirrors, anything hard that she can bang and it makes a noise! She's so sweet and I love her!

My boyfriend climbed the tree but cockatiels being crafty flew away when he was nearly on Mac's hand. Magic then proceeded to fly on the roof of a house further down the road and walk up and down the roof. We got a ladder and Mac got onto the roof and chased Magic over the roof and he eventually got hold of him, I don't know how but he did and put him down his overalls. The outcome is that Magic does not seem any worse off for his antics.

When it was just me and my bird, everything was fine, but as soon as she met my husband I became the other woman. If she is out I am not even aloud to sit next to my mate because she gets so agitated and flies at me. She sits on his shoulder, closes her eyes and rubs her head all over his face. I have to admit I was a little hurt when she rejected me for him, but to see the look of total adoration on her face when she is near him is so cute!! After a year or so of mourning, I came across an article on cockatiels. After reading it, I began to do further research on them. That's when Percy came into my life. He's my angel, my life saver. How can I possibly explain in this brief space how much joy he has brought to my life. After falling completely in love with Percy, I got two more tiels (pearl, and daisy). Comment: My family owns two cockatiels, both males, and both horrid little birds. Corky was abused before we recieved him, so he has reason to be scared and mean, but Nibbles just has an attitude. We let him out of his cage from day one, so has had free reign of the house for several years and decided that he owns the house. And along with the house, he also owns...our cat, Gimpy (she has three legs, hence the name). For some reason, Nibbles has taken custody of Gimpy, and he will not let anyone touch her if he is around. If someone does try, Nibbles will attack both the person and the cat. Picking Gimp up is totally out of the question, as Nibbles will fly on your head and bite you. He follows her around the house, wherever she goes, sits guard over her if she is sleeping, and freaks out if he is in his cage, and Gimpy is in within his sight or his hearing. Poor Gimp hates him so much, but only retaliates occasionally, smacking him with her paw. We have no idea where Nibbies got it in his head that the cat is his, but he did, and it's annoying!!

He flew into the sky until we almost couldn't tell the differnce between him and the wild birds. We tryed to keep up with him, running down the street and in the fields until we could no longer see him. We have a specific whistle that we use to call him so we whistled and he whistled back and it sounded closer and closer until he landed in a tree in front of us. We got his cage and threw bird seed on the ground to see if he would come down but he wouldn't. I called him and pointed to my shoulder and finaly he flew right down to me and I put him in his cage. This same thing happened twice, He comes back every time!!!

He loves to whistle a song from Fiddler on the Roof, and his fun is making the beeping sound from the microwave or as today he copied the Squirrel calling thing my husbands uses.We have enjoyed him a lot. He tells us "Iggy is a pretty bird" and his new saying is "Iggy is a funny bird!" And he laughs when he says that. His wing was clipped wrong at the pet store where we bought him so he has always had problems with it and flying, hurts him if he uses it. So his favorite place is on my husbands shoulder riding in style.

Comment: I have two cockateils, a boy and a girl who have been together since birth. They can't stand each other, but can't live w/out each other. Sometimes I'll take one of them out and the other one will sing it's hearts content during their moment of peace. Sometimes, though, they get mad when the other of them gets the attention. My girl bird, Alice or olive oil or even oscar the grouch, will get so mad that she'll start doing flips in her cage while whisling for the other bird. It's pretty humorous!

Comment: We were in Waco visiting relatives and we heard a cockatiel in the tree. My dad talked it down and it landed on his should. We put the bird in a cage and brought it home to Oklahoma. My grandmother really wanted that bird and we didn't know it until we left Waco. Two days later, my uncle spotted another cockatiel flying around his bull pen and talked it into landing on a branch he was holding. They put that one in a cage and gave it to my grandmother. Turns out, I believe they were mates. Mine was light colored and quiet, the other is dark and whistles at himself in the mirror. I ended up getting to bring him home too on my last visit to Waco. As soon as we put the two cages side by side, they started chatting. When the males whistled at the female, she acted like she was mad at him and stretched her feathers out to scare him.

All we have to do is move our thumb and forefingers together and he will put his head down and walk over to our hand with his hand bent down. And to save another e-mail, Sidney likes to pick up things and throw them so we can pick them up and give them to him. Once he flew onto the dining room table, and took all the napkins out of the napkin holder and threw them on the floor. It was too cute.

Comment: One day I was taking out the scraps and was setting them down and Sunshine (my bird) flew out the door she went up and over the house. I was screaming bloody murder and my uncle Joey & my mom came out side to look for Sunshine. Finally my mom spotted SunShine on the roof!!!!!! Now this was in mid August of 99' in Kentucky, and it was literally 110 degrees out side and that shingled roof was even hotter on Sunshine's feet. So while I was looking for the ladder to get on the roof Joey climbed up the T.V. antennas and Sunshine ran to him. While they where coming down the hill, here I come running as fast as I could up the hill carrying the ladder. My mom literally fell laughing so hard because after all of this I couldn't find the ladder!!!!!!!!

Comment: Well, 'Bob' (who got his name by bobbing his head all the time--i know, kinda dull, but bob is bob) He likes attention and to make noise. The only song he knows is 'we wish you a merry christmas' but i'm trying to teach him the Austin Powers thing, maybe mission impossible. Well, Bob used to smack his beak against the wooden perch or cage or anything really, really hard to get someone's attention. He stopped doing it after a while. Also, he somehow got a tiny little ring (like from a keychain) stuck on his beak, not so it went actually through the poor bird's beak but so it really looked like he had gotten a major peircing job. We had to wrap him in a towel to get it out.

Another time, we took him outside, and he squirmed away after badly biting my mom and flew into a tree. WAY UP INTO A TREE. We spent two hours chasing him from tree to tree until we could actually get him. ;)

Comment: Perfect example of a spoiled bird: Lacey is my hand raised 5 year old cinnamon pearl. I have had her since she was 4 months and she rules this house. Talk about spoiled and self confident... She lives with three other cats and believe it or not, they all get along. Lacey takes naps with Blackie and Tarah, my 10 yr old persians and dominates the food bowl whenever there is tuna fish on the menu. Lacey perches on the side of the dish and when she has finished, the cats are allowed their turn, (Really, I have photo's to prove it). She spends very little time in her cage prefering to perch on the top of the cage or snuggle with one of the cats or myself. Once again, I have photo's to prove it. She's sitting on my shoulder as I type this and is letting me know I should pay attention to her by tugging at my hair, it's snuggle time. Gotta Go!!!!!

Comment: My husband and I were driving across the country from Florida to California. We were in 2 separate cars and I had our tiel (The Budge) with me. We stopped at a rest area in Phoenix, AZ. It was so hot there. We took The Budge out of the car for a breather, instead she almost had a heart attack! It was so hot out there, even in the shade, it was like an oven! We were relaxing, trying to get cool when I looked at the Budge and she was panting like crazy! We'd only been there a few minutes! Her tongue was going in and out, and her chest was heaving! All the water at the water fountains was hot and there was no A/C anywhere, so we went racing for the car. My husband (smart guy) ran and bought a bottled water from a machine and we cranked the a/c and dribbled the cold water all over her. She doesn't usually like that kind of thing, but she was into it that day! She cooled right down and we went on. We were freaked out - it was scary.

Comment: I was sick with upper respritory problems. I could barely talk. I woke up and started my day, I came in the kitchen for something to drink, to my dismay my cockatiel flew out the back door. I didn't even know he was out of his cage. I looked for him and called for him all over the neighborhood for at least 3 hours, nothing, not even a feather. I was very sad and my son of 18 was the only one home, he had no comfort for me. I went out front and cried for about 15 minutes, I decided to put his cage out front and I kept going in and out of my house. Well finally I went out and he flew across the sky, mind you I hadn't seen him for at least 3 hours well there he went and he landed in a tree, we were able to get him down and take him back home. He is no ordinary cockatiel he knows how to sing and talk very well, he can sing the Andy Griffith theme song, and other songs too. He says pretty bird and hello birdie. He is vey cute and I am very lucky to still own him. His name is pretty birdie and he named himself. The most spiritual part of this story is that it happened on the birthday of my deceased father.

Comment: Our pet, Calvin, turned out to be a she. She laid eggs continuously, and nothing we tried would discourage her. We talked to vets and breeders, alike, with no success. We do not want to be breeders. Her cage had a smooth floor, and she laid her eggs on it. She sat on them almost constantly, and never tired of it. If we removed them, she laid more. Finally, we decided to get her a new cage. The one we purchased had a wire slat floor with a removable tray under it. She never spent time on the floor, and therefore never laid another egg. It was a solution to our problem by pure chance!

Today I went into the room where they live to see how they were. Elly was shaking and looked sick.I picked her up very gently and brought her out of the room to have my Dad look at her and see what was wrong. All of a sudden as I was showing her to my dad she layed an egg! It fell to the floor and cracked. Luckily it was not fertilized as it did not have a spot of blood in the yoke. I am also glad of this because they are still too young to brood. I have a hobby of raising parakeets, but now I am going to raise cockatiels when Rosy and Elly reach a year old in just three months.

I have had him for one day (he is olny 4 months old) and he is already doing the wolf whistel. He is also really loving, he likes to give me kisses. I hope you can not spoil a bird. Today I was eatting cookies and Zoe was on my hand when I went to take a bite he almost stuck his head in my mouth. I then set him on the table and he got on top of the cookies and looked at our dog as if he was teasing her. I think our dog is feeling just a bit left out because she never gets to sit on the table. Well to make a long story short, we made many attempts to catch him, but he would always fly away so we never caught him, but one day while I was gone he landed on our trailer roof and my Dad caught him. It seems that the crows were nesting and the cockatiel was seen as a threat to the young. They attacked. The cockateil flew to the ground with the crows in close pursuit. I might add that I was not far behind. And it was a good thing for the little cockatiel. When I arrived all I could see were flying feathers. The crrows flew away and I picked up a very frightened little bird. His name is freebie crowbait. He runs the house , but then I guess that is what cockatiels do best.

I got so used to calling him "Bird" or "Birdie" while we waited for his adult feathers to grow in to dtrmn his sex, that now I still just call him "Bird." He too prefers chips and peanuts to his pellets and seed. Though he doesn't speak words (please let me know if this is abnormal), he is smart enough to have figured out how to use one of my own "superlative sounds" in his own context: When I get frustrated I often say "Ohhhhhhhh", in a gruf, growling sort of way. Now when I do something C doesn't like (such as cover his cage), he says, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh." Go figure!

I had been doing my homework and was alarmed after about an hour when I realised I hadn't heard a peep from my tiel, Piper in a while (which was a very infrequent occurrance!) I searched my house all over in every possible spot and was beginning to panic. For some reason, something told me to look inside our walk-in closet. The door was open and there she was, in the least expected place, her car carrier! She had gotten indie of it with some tissues and was trying to make a nest *lol* A few days later she began to lay eggs but that is another story alltogether.......

So now we have Billy (3) Sunshine (5months) Snowy (3months) and Pams(3months) Pams stand for PMS because she was a big brat, anyway we did not feel that they were safe out in our living room because we have two cats one of wich will eat them wether we are watching or not. So we decided to put them in the master bedroom and that is were they are to this day. Apparently Billy decided it was really boring in the room and flew to the ground were he likes to eat seads that have fallen. But instead of eating seads he slipped his little but right under the door. And up he flew were he felt it was more fun to be. It tooks us 15 min. to catch him and return him in the room. Now, because we are afraid that he will do it again and a cat will get him, we have placed a towel by the door and shove it under it every time we walk out of it.

Comment: I have a teil named Angel. He is very, very, very sweet and affectionate. And he is sorta hyper. Any time a woman walks by he'll do a very loud Whoo-hoo whistle. So i was having a sleepover party for my Birthday(when I got This little nut)and we were playing truth or dare. One of the dares were to make out with the bird. When the girl did this she had to do it for exactly two minutes and Angel whoo -hoo whistled through the whole thing

Comment: I was in my room playing with my bird and there were construction men in my house. When I went to walk down my hall way my bird whistled a cat call (like when you want to say someone is sexy) and the construction guy (who was kinda dirty) looked at me and said " Thank You" in a very sly voice. Ha Ha!!!

Comment: My tiel "Snake" was with me for about 7 years. Anyways one night at about 3:30 he woke me up with this terrible screaming, and flying into my bedroom! I got up right away and as I entered the living room saw that the ceiling fan had caught on fire! Thanks to Snake no damage was done except to the fan. I could have lost my house and much more. Snake will always be my HERO! Frank
